Story:
The cost of interpreters at a murder trial of two illegal immigrants was $39,813.02. This represented 40% of the total costs of the trial. The two certified Spanish interpreters worked in 30 minute shifts. The proceedings had to stop when the defendant removed the headphones for a rest.

Facts:
- The costs are not over because the case is scheduled for sentencing and appeal hearings.
- These sums could represent a serious cost to a small county;
Black Ford County.

Language Issues:
- Language seems to be an important conduit between the democratic principle of the rule of law and the private citizen.

Comments:
- Justice must not only be seen to be done, but must also be understood when it is being done.

Bottom-Line:
What are the cost limits of a democracy?
